AMVIR participates in the European Road Safety Charter

Every year thousands of European citizens loose their lives and millions get injured (often with permanent disabilities) in road accidents.

The European Commission, in view of the pain caused by the significant loss of lives and of the serious injuries, but also of the induced enormous financial cost (~2% of EU GNP), set itself the target, in its "White Paper on European transport policy", of halving the number of road deaths by 2010.

The European Road Safety Charter, which is an appeal to all civil society organizations to provide a tangible contribution in increasing road safety in Europe, is meant to help achieving this difficult goal.

AMVIR, willing to accept this challenge and taking once more social initiatives, decided to contribute in improving road safety in a sector, which in the last years has proven to be a significant factor of life loss. That is the influence of the old commercial vehicle park on road safety, with many tragic recent examples of road accidents with the involvement of busses and trucks.

Regarding the above, the actions taken by AMVIR in the context of his commitment to the European Road Safety Chart were the following:
  • Preparation by the National Technical University of Athens, of an in-depth study on the impact of old circulating commercial vehicles on road safety.
  • Comprehensive communicational campaign aiming to make the public aware of the impact of old commercial vehicles on road safety.
  • Organization of press conferences, providing detailed information to journalists regarding the importance of the matter.
